Comparing Button Bars to "Add RSS Feed to My Yahoo"

Quick tip: If you're looking for a fast way to add a feed to MyYahoo, check this workaround using this link.

Summary

This is an unofficial user-beta-test of the "Add my Yahoo" buttons. This test found that adding RSS feeds to "My Yahoo" is very easy, so long as users are signed into Yahoo.

This blog entry outlines the 12-tests used during this unofficial beta test. For reference, the 12-tests are highlited in the box.

This is a raw-blog-entry; the updates at show the final results as they came in.

Update 24-Nov-04, UTC 01:53:02

We next tested the buttons "when users were not signed it" to see if we got different results. This suggests that users that are not members of Yahoo or members who are not signed-in will not be able to see the sample-feed in the right hand box, and unclear what Yahoo is doing.

Again, the feeds were recognized, but there are some inconsistencies. After pressing the buttons below in tests 1-12, we achieved the following results:

A. Desired: Direct link to sample feed window, prompt button to add to MyYahoo. This was successful in tests: 2,3,5,7

B. Second-choice: Error message in the window displaying the sample RSS feed, but still shows the prompt buttons on the right to add to my Yahoo. This can be fixed.
This occurred in Tests: 1,6,8

C. Third choice: No message or access to the feed, but a direct prompt to sign-into Yahoo. This is less idea in that the user does not have a prompt what they are adding. This occured in tests: 9,10,11,12

D. Test 4 requires research: Into documentation and linking.

Update 24-Nov-04, UTC 01:35:53

  • All buttons worked during retests. 24-Nov-04, UTC 01:28:19

  • No issues with MyYahoo-Atom interface on the buttons.

  • Test 4 remains problematic.

  • No adjustments made to any URL at blogger, nor any interface changes; therefore, conclude: No problems with blogger-atom interface.

    Update Comment 24-Nov-04, UTC 01:35:53

Next step: Using the button bars to add the feed, regardless user status [Signed in or out]

Below is the original post-test report. Note the initial test findings are someone inconsistent; and subsequent testing revealed the problem was with the interface between Yahoo and Atom, not with Atom. These issues appear to have been resolved.

    Summary

MyYahoo beta is coming along quite nicely and the team is showing great progress. If you want to link to an RSS feed using a "Add to my yahoo button", you're safe if the RSS Stream is using Feedburner. You're also safe if you want want to use an Atom feed, but are using a link instead of a button [See Test 3].

    Overview

There is a potential issue with the Yahoo-Atom-button. The problem does not appear to be with Atom, but a unique feature of those "Add to my yahoo" buttons using the Atom Feed.

    Test started: 23-Nov-04, ~ UTC 22:30:00
    Test completed: 24-Nov-04, UTC 00:39:57

This test did not evaluate whether the feed could actually be added. The next step is to evaluate which buttons can successfully add a stream to MyYahoo.

This test evaluated 12 buttons used to add an RSS feed to MyYahoo! beta. This test did not attempt to add the feed, only determine whether there were issues with the button HTML or the particular feeds used in the button HTML.

We used every publicly provided combination from Feedburner and Yahoo to determine which button bars were useful in adding RSS feeds to My Yahoo. The source of the URL and button is incorporated at each test by reference.

We successfully linked to RSS streams using button bars with a Feedburner RSS. Test 3 shows that not all Atom feeds were incompatible, indicating the issue is not with Atom but with the Yahoo-Atom interface contained in the button.

Compatible Feedburner feed was a derivative of the "incompatible" Atom feed

We remain unclear what the issues are with Yahoo-atom interface: Whether it is a Yahoo-beta issue; or a user-generated issue when generating the feed.

We remain skeptical there is a problem with Atom as Test 3 recognizes the feed. Further, let us recall that the source of the Feedburner RSS feed was the Atom-feed. So it remains unclear why a derivative RSS feed [Feedburner, 2nd Generation from an original blogger-atom feed] would work, while to original RSS feed would not work.

Rather than jump to the conclusion that there is a problem with Atom, we are more inclined to believe that the issue is with the Yahoo-Atom interface that is unique to Yahoo-beta in the button.

Taking a leap we might speculate that the problem is related to a URL-coding issue unique to Yahoo-Atom interface in beta. For some reason buttons using the Atom feeds are not able to connect, while one can directly link to MyYahoo using an HTML link.

    Discussion

This is a test of the button bars to add an RSS feed to My Yahoo.

At this juncture, it's premature to evaluate conclusively the reasons which buttons worked or did not work. However, if you're in a rush, the results are below and you can see which of the existing feeds worked and which did not.

At first, we were surprised the much heralded Atom RSS feed failed to interface with MyYahoo in all cases. This is surprising because Atom has generally been quite good.

However, because Atom and Yahoo did interface successfully in test 3-HTML link [not button], we conclude that the problem is not with Atom, but with Yahoo-Atom interface in the button code.

Feedburner worked in all cases. This was surprising in that Feedburner had, until now, appeared to have some issues with interfacing with Yahoo RSS-beta.

However, because the Feedburner RSS feed was a "derivative" of Atom [google's atom feed was fed into feedburner to create the Feedburner RSS], we speculate that there is no problem with Atom.

On the surface, had there been a real issue with the Atom feed, we would have expected the similar results in the Atom feed. This was not the case.

More specifically, we conclude that the interface issue is confined to those Yahoo buttons that use the Atom feed.

To reiterate, because the Feedburner feed is a derivative of Atom, we conclude the issue is one of an Atom-Yahoo interface issue unique to the button not the HTML link, and not a problem with Atom as a feed.

However, the results are not conclusive. It remains to be understood what embedded codes with the MyYahoo-beta generate different interations with an original-Atom feed vice a derivative-Feedburner feed.
