Haloscan Tips

There is a forum to talk with other users. Here's a sample of the Haloscan workarounds:

  • How to delete a comment: When the "delete all" button doesn't work

  • How to find which comment links with which blog-spot: When you cannot find a hack to allow you to link your comment box to a specific blog-spot.

  • How to include a long link from blogger in Haloscan comments: When you want to track-back to your own comment to find your blog

  • How to get rid of duplicate IPs from banned lists: When you ban an IP, but the IP shows up more than once on the list

    Comment deletion

If you want to delete a comment, not all the functions work. The "select all" or "delete all" option doesn't work.

It appears to work, but when you go back and check your comments, the stuff you deleted will still be there.

    Workaround: Choose the individual icon

Until this is corrected, the workaround: Individually delete each item using the icon, not the delete-all box.

    Blog Finder

Which blog is this comment associated with?

One problem is associating a specific comment with a specific blog. Haloscan has a nice, central list of all comments. All you have to do is go to the comment link and you can find your comment.

Small problem. There's no easy way to figure out which blog-spot is associated with this comment.

    Workaround

Until someone comes up with a hack, there are two things you can do.

    1. Link back from your comment-box to your blog

What you can do is include a link in your first comment to your own blog. When you go to your Haloscan comment-index, when you click on the comment, you'll see the comment-box with the URL you already placed there.

    2. Shorten Your URL

Remember that Haloscan comment-URLs are shorter than blogger-comments. You'll need to save your blogger-URL as a tiny URL, then post that into your first comment.

    Comment Rating Systems

If you're trying to install a comment-rating system... you might try Newsgator. They allow ratings for an example. Perhaps this could be modified for each individual comment as well.

    Banned IP Roster
    Eliminating Duplicate IPs

How do I get rid of duplicate banned IP numbers?

Sometimes what happens is when you ban an IP, a single number will appear twice. This is to say that if you enter a single IP [XXX.XX.XXX.XX], this number will appear twice.

If you then go back and delete the duplicate, they both fall away.

    Workaround

If you find the duplicate annoying and really want to get it removed:

    A. Right click to save the IP number; [you'll need it to re-enter it]

    B. Delete the IP number form you banned list; [both will disappear]

    C. Re-enter the saved IP number [You saved it right?]

    D. Re-ban the IP. [There should only be one for each IP...]

Presto! You'll only have one-IP listed. Maybe...
