NewsGator changed: How to add a new feed to NewsGator Online

Summary

Mud's Tests Newsgator Feeder is a simple tool to accomplish a simple task.

Currently Newsgator has changed their links. This may cause new users some distress. The old way of adding a feed was simply by clicking on "Add feed." Users were given a direct access to a box. Now, things have changed.

This tool will allow users to remain calm and quickly add a feed without having to go through extra links.

This note outlines the detailed changes in links. Also, the note outlines the number of steps required to add a feed.

As you can see, there are additional steps required. The purpose of this simple is to to:

  • Permit easy access;
  • Allow users to quickly add a feed;
  • Add your feed without getting confused; and
  • To accomplish all of the above without any download.

    Background

This note outlines the detailed steps required to add a feed. The many steps can be confusing. This note hopes to explain the detailed steps.

Further, users may find that the instructions are complicated. To get around this, Mud's Tests has created the Newsgator Feeder, which is a one-step Feed-Addition tool, linking users directly to the feed-addition box.

The updated Newsgator Feed Addition window

Here's the new link to add a feed. Your current NewsGator buttons do not have to be changed. They are still correct.

All they've done is change the layering of the links and boxes. NewsGator Online moved their links around. But its still easier to add a feed to NewsGator than Bloglines. LOL

    An online tool

I've also created a simple spot for you to add any subscription to NewsGator online here, courtesy of EchoEcho.com Ref.

If you want to automate this link for your own page, I swiped some code from EchoEcho.com, and it's at the bottom in the gold box.

    What they changed

If you're multi-tasking in the NewsGator and hoping to add a quick feed, they changed the boxes around.

NewsGator under "NewsGator manager" has changed the links for adding a feed. Normally, there's an open box for you to drop the feed in. Not any more. They changed the links around.

  • All these changes can be so confusing!

Mud's Tests has provided for you five [count them, 5] methods to work around this confusing situation.

    Method One
    Wordy instructions

    A. Start at you your top-menu,

    B. CLICK on NewsGator manager

    C. Click on Add a Feed

    C. For reference on the right, the left-white button is "find Feed" [Don't click that]

    D. SCAN RIGHT on those buttons: Look to the far right gray box for "other feeds" ...

    E. CLICK on "other feeds" -- that is where you can add a new feed as before.

    Method Two

    Steps with links

To find the new link in NewsGator, and add a feed:

  • 1. Go to NewsGator Manager

  • 2. Click on Add a feed

  • 3. Click on Other Feeds

    Method Three

    Getting around a firewall

Want to use Feedburner's subscription, but cannot download it?

If you're behind a firewall, and cannot use the Feedburner subcription tool, you've got another option: Replace my feed URI with the URI for the subscription you want to add. You're all set!

    Method Four

Offering you the code for your own site

Users may find the above steps cumbersome. Here is the source code to assist you. Remember, there is no download required.

Source: Copy the following to the <body> section of your page:

Mud's Tests NewsGator Shortcut from EchoEcho.com

    <a href="#" onClick="MyWindow=window.open('http://www.newsgator.com/ngs/subscriber/AddSub.aspx','MyWindow','toolbar=yes,location=yes,directories=yes,status=yes,menubar=yes,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,width=600,height=300'); return false;">PLACE_YOUR_LINKTEXT_HERE</a>

To save you the chance of possible error, I've let the code bleed over to my right .. that way all you have to do is copy it and throw it where you want without a chance of there being a problem with spaces.

[Now you know why I only put one blog-spot per page. ;-)]

    Method Five

Direct Access with Mud's Tests Tool

  • Here is the link

However, in the event that the above solutions do not work, Mud's Tests has created an online tool.

This tool has the following benefits:

  • It is direct

  • It is one step

  • It takes you directly to the box

  • You do not have to learn any new instructions

  • No matter what changes occur in the NewsGator sitemap, this direct-tool will continue to take you directly to the feed-adder-location.

  • No safety helmet is required.

  • You do not have to know anything about XML, RSS, or Atom.

  • Just click.

  • You do not have to change any code.

  • No updates to your template are required.

  • You do not have to know anything about blogs.

  • Instant access around any firewall.

  • It is an online tool.

  • Saves diskspace on your hardrive at home.

  • You do not have to open another account to buy more memory.

  • No requirements to read any documentation about HTTP tunneling

  • No need to go to your IT department to ask them to open up the firewall and let you use the tool.

  • It works with Newsgator Online. Fully Synchronized. And best of all, it's just really neat.

Once again, proving that no task is too simple to be over-engineered. ;-)

    More juice for you!
