Taggregator, FeedTagger, 14-Mar-05 UTC 19:09:57

This discusses the workaround for new users. You may get the following indications if your computer does not accept cookies, or you are behind a firewall that is blocking your direct interface.

  • Note: If this message does not answer your question, contact comments@feedtagger.com, or visit tahpot's weblog, the designer of FeedTagger.

Error: FeedTagger sign-in approved, but unable to proceed after first screen.

User Problem: First action fails, unable to proceed, computer freezes, information is not accepted after first log-in.

    Resolution:

  • Configure computer to accept cookies.

If you are behind a firewall, talk to your IT department:

  • Ask them nicely to permit access to FeedTagger; or
  • Talk to FeedTagger to see if they can assist you in encouraging the IT department to allow http tunneling for feedtagger.

    Messages and Indications

You will be prompted. Here is the information you will see:
    Select popular feeds
Select the feeds you would initially like in your account and specify the tags that should be applied
If you do not accept cookies, even if you de-select all items and press "proceed," nothing will happen. The following data will not change:

    Slashdot [tags: geek,technology]
    SitePoint.com - Blogs - Summary [tags: blogs,technology]
BBC News News Front Page World Edition [tags: news, world]
Allrecipes Dinner Recipes Daily Feed [tags: food, recipes]
If you de-selected all items, and cleared everything out: Same result, all items re-filled with tic-marks, and the provided-tags.

If you attempt to clear site, re-enter site, still no change. Continued to get the same "no response"-response.

    FAQ Suggestions

As a suggestion for the site, here are some possible FAQ that users may want to have addressed at the first page, after they have been approved, and signed-in:

  • A. Cookie reminder on this page

Ex: Would it be helpful if there was a "you need to configure your computer to accept cookies" at this screen?

Yes, other than the initial message about cookies prior to signing-in, there is no signal of what might be the problem on this page.

  • B. Link to forums and feature requests

Ex: Is it possible to use the site without cookies, as in a "non-cookie" version of the same tasks or is that not supportable with the current tag-concept?

It is possible. Whether the site does it or not is another matter. They may be looking at it.

  • C. Hints on page

Ex: Are users supposed to de-select items from the tag-names [on the right column], or can they leave them as is?

Would be good if there was a message of what to do with the tags at the first-sign-in.

  • D. Question-Answer [?] Hints

Ex: Do users have to include spaces after commas after tags?

Would be helpful if there was a [?]-type link by each new item to indicate the groundrules. Remember, this is the first time we see any of this.
